The term psychological thriller gets thrown around a lot for many authors. Amazon itself has Silver Linings Playbook listed as such. Psychologically stimulating? Sure. Thriller? Not in the slightest. Perhaps my definition is not the same as the proverbial "Powers That Be".This being said, I find DaRKesT to be one of the few, true, psychological thrillers in publication today. The main character, Dean, is not particularly likeable at the start. Actually, I'll be truthful and tell you that he flat out pissed me off. His behavior is selfish and reckless. This is, in case you didn't already realize, the mark of a great author. Someone who doesn't just create a character but can elicit an emotional reaction from his readers is kind of rare in this genre. Many horror/p.t. novels lack the connection to their audience that is necessary to make us CARE about the outcome.
For the first half of the book, you're on a ride with Dean. You, like him, are wholly uncertain as to whether or not the man is sane at all. You will question everything you are reading. You will be looking for the deeper psychological meaning behind everything he sees, says, and is said to him.
The story switches gears about half way through and I found myself just accepting Dean's reality as cannon without question for the remainder of the book.
This is a story of self-discovery fueled by addiction, horrific visions of things that are thankfully only real in our imaginations, and the hope of redemption. It is well worth the time spent inside your own head.

DarKesT Jason Jeffery 9781482366396 Books Reviews
A new and novel idea. Took me couple of chapters to get into it but it all came together in a seamless fascinating story.
I enjoyed it.
One of the best horror/dark fiction ebook I have read in a long time. That being said I do not often read this genre of books but this one is fantastic. If you are looking for a great new horror ebook this is one I highly recommend. It is very well written and will get you hooked.
This novel is an amazing look into the depths of the human mind, addiction, fear, reality, hallucination, redemption and all the horror in between.
Dean Burrows, acclaimed author, alcoholic & drug addict ends up in rehabilitation after he is involved in a horrific crash while under the influence. Dean must go through rehabilitation, yet he believes the drugs and alcohol are necessary evils that keep his night terrors away, literally. The story follows Dean's thoughts and actions throughout his rehabilitation.
When faced with sobriety, Dean's night terrors quickly return, yet these are not the usual run of the mill nightmares, as Dean's night terrors seem to become real. In the beginning, Dean will do anything to avoid his fears, yet as rehabilitation continues and the nightmares become increasingly dangerous, Dean finds he must face his fears in order to not only save himself but those close to him as well.
Yet are his fears becoming reality, or is Dean in the grips of horrific hallucinations the further his detoxification continues? As one moves through the story, the line between reality and hallucination begins to blur quite a bit, leading the reader to wonder where the line is drawn. This is a terrific aspect of the story, keeping the reader engaged in trying to figure out which is which.
The story becomes so much more though, as the story not only encompasses Dean's fears, it encompasses the reader's fears inevitably as well. Whether you fear ghosts, sobriety, fear for family, or even my personal fear, spiders, you will definitely find that creepy moment (and maybe even a nightmare or two for yourself if reading directly before bed!)
As in all of his stories, the author's trademark descriptive capacity pulls the reader right into the novel itself, making you feel more as though you are experiencing the story directly, rather than just reading the book. The pace, tone, and style of DarKeST is quite different than the author's previous novel, Bloom. While reading Bloom felt similar to a fast-paced, wild roller coaster ride straight towards the end of the world, I would describe this read more as though you have suddenly found yourself lost in a dark, creepy forest at night, stumbling towards the only exit, leading you into an old abandoned cemetery. Anyone who enjoys a good gripping dark novel or horror will greatly enjoy this story.
Wasn't sure what to expect. Kept me truly enthralled in the middle and had to know the ending. Nice job, Jason!
This book makes you want to sleep with the lights on. Makes nightmares seem simple, from the first page to the last you are hooked. Great daytime reading, not recommended for a bedtime story.
I have read a lot of Mr. Jeffrey's work from the beginning of his writing career up to his present new release, long time fans and new fans will not be disappointed! Couldn't put it down, and cannot wait to read what he brings us next.
This was a great book from start to finish. The story line is immediately captivating, the momentum is solid and the plot twist at the end was very unexpected. The main character, Dean Burrows was highly relate-able and his character development was fantastic.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that loves dark fiction.
